Synopsis:
Within the huge diversity that is modern-day Canada, all non-aboriginal people share an immigrant history. For some, the stories are fresh. For many others, the struggles of distant ancestors have long been lost through the passage of time. In The Saga of Murdo MacLeod, the first film in his animated series on Canadian history, from Mike Burns’ four published stories, The Water of Life (Chemin des Cantons, 2009), Montreal filmmaker G. Scott MacLeod fuses rich pencil animation with new digital media to provide a deeply moving depiction of an iconic early Canadian immigrant experience.
Expelled from their land on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland, Murdo MacLeod and his clan are given passage as ballast on a timber ship bound for Lower Canada. It is the late 1830s. Those who survive the voyage arrive in Quebec City with nothing more than axes in hand and speaking only Gaelic amongst the French and English population. Travelling on foot, they make their way to the region near Sherbrooke, ending up on Abenaki territory near Gould. There, with winter fast approaching, they find their only hope for survival in the hands of Canada’s first people.

Synopsis :
Hormis les Premières Nations, la population du Canada multiculturel d’aujourd’hui est issue de l’immigration. Si l’histoire des uns est relativement récente, celle des autres a été tissée par de lointains ancêtres luttant pour leur survie, et dont la trace s’est perdue au fil du temps.
Dans La saga de Murdo MacLeod, ce court-métrage sur l’Histoire du Canada mettant en scène pour la première fois un conte de Mike Burns issu de son recueil «The Water of Life» (Chemin des Cantons, 2009), le réalisateur montréalais G. Scott MacLeod marie judicieusement animations et nouvelles technologies numériques afin de dresser le portrait émouvant d’une histoire d’immigration canadienne mythique.
Expulsés de leur terre située sur l’Île de Lewis en Écosse, Murdo MacLeod et son clan embarquent à fond de cale sur un navire en direction du Bas-Canada.
Nous sommes à la fin des années 1830.
Les survivants du voyage débarquent à Québec avec pour tout bagage leurs haches et leur langue gaélique, au beau milieu d’une population parlant français et anglais.
Se déplaçant à pied, ils se dirigent vers la région de Sherbrooke et aboutissent tout près de Gould, en territoire abénaki. L’hiver approchant à grands pas, leur seul espoir de survie repose entre les mains des Autochtones.
Écrit et conté par Mike Burns, conteur montréalais de renom, La saga de Murdo MacLeod évoque l’histoire de millions de Canadiens dont les ancêtres ont eu à faire de grands sacrifices afin de se tailler une place et de trouver leur liberté, et cela, grâce à la compassion d’un peuple à priori différent qui s’est avéré être un précieux allié.
